Easy meal planning for the busy family!
Have you ever noticed the huge difference in how your family eats—and how much you spend—when you actually sit down and plan your meals for the week? Trust me, the difference is night and day. When I take the time to meal plan, we not only eat healthier, but our grocery bill goes way down!
If you’re looking to eat better and save money, meal planning is your new best friend. Here’s how I make it work in our busy househol
Step 1: Start with the Family Schedule
The first thing I do is take a look at our family calendar. Do we have any evening activities or events? If we’re going to be out of the house more than usual, it impacts what I plan for dinner. I might choose something quick or prep ahead for those busy nights!
I also check my work schedule to see when I’ll be home. If I’ll be running late or need extra time to cook, I make sure to plan accordingly. Sometimes, my husband even takes the reins and handles dinner on those nights!
Pro tip: Knowing your schedule in advance makes it easy to decide whether to prep a big meal or opt for something simple!

Step 2: Inventory Check (Save Time and Money!)
Here’s one of my favorite hacks: I keep a running inventory of the food we already have at home. This is especially helpful for things like frozen foods (our deep freezer is in the garage, so I don’t always want to trek outside to check).
I keep my inventory list in my phone’s notes app, which makes it easy to reference while I’m at the store. Before starting the meal plan, I check what we already have—this helps prevent food waste and ensures I don’t overbuy ingredients!
Step 3: Browse Recipes & Put It All Together
Now comes the fun part—recipe browsing! I check out our family favorites and also scout out new recipes on Pinterest to spice things up. Once I have a list of meals, I double-check my inventory and create a grocery list for the items we need.
Don’t forget the essentials like bread, milk, and fruit!
Step 4: Write It All Down & Make It Visible
Once I’ve got my meal plan sorted, I write it down in a central spot. I use a dry erase weekly calendar that’s mounted next to the fridge, so it’s easy for both me and my husband to see. This way, we’re both on the same page, and it helps us remember to thaw meat ahead of time!
If you’re more of a pen-and-paper kind of person, I’ve created a free printable meal planner you can download!
Why Meal Planning Works
Meal planning has truly transformed our family’s health and budget. We eat better, spend less on groceries, and waste way less food. Plus, having meals planned out in advance means we’re never scrambling for dinner at the last minute!
If you’re ready to give it a try, I promise that meal planning will quickly become your secret weapon. It’s the small change that makes a huge difference!
